Equine-Assisted Services

What is Equine-Assisted Therapy?

Equine‑assisted services is an umbrella term used to describe professionally led activities involving horses. Equine‑assisted learning sits within this and focuses on developing skills and fostering self‑awareness. It can support growth in areas such as communication, leadership, emotional awareness, and emotional intelligence.

Why Horses?

Horses are exceptionally sensitive animals with a natural ability to read non‑verbal communication and respond to the energy and emotions of the people around them. Their instincts as herd animals mean they are constantly assessing their environment making them highly attuned to subtle shifts in body language, intention, and emotional state. Often when we don’t acknowledge the shift!

Because horses respond honestly and without judgement, they offer immediate, authentic feedback. This creates a powerful learning environment where individuals can safely explore patterns in their behaviour, communication, and emotional responses. The horse’s reactions often mirror what is happening internally for the person, helping to build insight, self‑awareness, and confidence.
In this way, working with horses becomes a deeply experiential process—one that supports personal growth, emotional regulation, and meaningful change in a way that traditional talking‑based approaches may not always reach.

Many people experience a strong emotional component to their eating patterns—whether that’s anxiety, shame, overwhelm, perfectionism, or a sense of losing control. These emotions can be difficult to recognise, name, or express, especially when eating has become a coping strategy or a source of distress.

This is where horses can play a powerful role.

Because horses are highly attuned to non‑verbal cues and emotional states, they often reflect what a person is feeling beneath the surface—even when that person isn’t fully aware of it themselves. Their honest, non‑judgemental responses can gently highlight patterns such as:
Equine‑assisted learning can help individuals explore the emotional landscape that sits behind their eating behaviours, forging self reflection, discovery and learning for which a foundation of change can be built.

Honest Feedback

Horses don't have hidden agendas.
They provide honest, in-the-moment
feedback on our behaviour and
internal state. They respond to us as
we are, and if we change, they change
their response.

Co-regulation

Their calm and present nature provides
a powerful opportunity to practice
co-regulation, where we learn to manage
our own energetic and emotional state
by attuning to another being.

Safety & Trust

In a well-facilitated session, horses
create a non-judgmental space,
allowing clients to explore their feelings
and behaviours without fear of criticism.
